Robison Planetarium Internship

The Robison Planetarium is seeking an intern for the spring semester!

The Planetarium Intern will work 20 hours per week at the rate of $9.00 per hour.

Description of the position
This internship provides the opportunity for an individual to learn the skills necessary to operate an event venue. The intern will work with the Planetarium Director to schedule and host Planetarium shows at the Del and Norma Robison Planetarium and Multimedia Theatre, maintain and update the Planetarium website, communicate with the public via email and phone, and manage the Planetarium social media platforms. The Planetarium Intern will also fill a supervisory role in regard to the student staff currently employed at the Planetarium.
As a show host, the Planetarium Intern will exercise and improve their interpersonal communication and public speaking skills. The intern will regularly host events, speaking in front of crowds of various ages and presenting information and answering questions in an understandable and entertaining way.
The Planetarium Intern will be trained in how to operate Planetarium equipment, including the hardware and software systems that control the Planetarium display, the classroom projection display, the lighting systems, and the audio system. In many instances, the intern will need to operate the Planetarium systems at the same time they are in front of an audience hosting shows. This will require the intern to achieve mastery of Planetarium functionality.
Required Qualifications:
  • Current Full-Time Truman Student
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Effective public speaking skills
  • Ability to efficiently operate and learn new various types of computer hardware and software.
  • Working proficiency with Microsoft Office
Desired Qualifications:
  • Video production skills – familiar with video cameras and basic filming techniques
  • Experience managing social media accounts for an organization
  • Experience managing WordPress websites

Specific Internship Learning Objectives
  • Develop the communication skills necessary to respond to questions during planetarium shows and show reservations via phone or email
  • Learn and understand the logistics and components of event planning through practice and by creating a continuity report
  • Learn and develop Managerial skills necessary to productively and professionally oversee employees and work as part of a team
  • Memorize data and information about astronomy and space exploration necessary for hosting planetarium shows
  • Plan and organize both standard and unique events to be hosted at the planetarium
  • Develop the skills necessary to create effective and engaging advertisements and posts for social media
  • Learn and understand multiple hardware/software systems involved in planetarium operation
